Association Annual Dinner 2018

   OPA ANNUAL DINNER   2018

The Old Priorian Association Annual Dinner

Thursday 19th April 2018

The Old Priorian Association held its 2018 Annual Dinner on 19th April at the Lansdowne Club, London; our Guest of Honour was Angela McHale (OP 1987).

Unfortunately, severe traffic problems in the region of the Club meant that the start of Dinner had to be delayed, but after an extended Drinks Reception just over seventy Old Priorians and their guests sat down and enjoyed an excellent meal. Three speeches followed from the President, Lewis Hill (OP 1975), the Headmaster, Andrew Johnson and Angela McHale.

Peter McHale (OP 1960, Angela's Father), Andrew Johnson, Angela McHale and Richrd Baker (OP 1959)

Angela was a pupil at St Benedict’s in the Sixth Form (there were no girls in the School below the Sixth in her time). She enjoyed participating in school productions and went on to read Politics at Warwick University, where she continued to perform in plays, and did a post-graduate diploma in Acting. She has performed in several plays, numerous TV productions –including Dr Who, Coronation Street and Eastenders – and has worked extensively with Catherine Tate and Lee Mack, writing and performing comedy. She is also a voice-over artist and runs a training consultancy focusing on communication skills.

So, Angela’s speech was most entertaining and wide-ranging; she paid tribute to St Benedict’s teachers, for their encouragement and focus on personal development. She acknowledged the influence of her Head of Drama, Mr John Moore, to whom she owes her love of acting. St Benedict’s, she said, has always upheld the importance of the co-curricular life – and of finding your passions and interests. She urged St Benedict’s current students, five of whom were were with us as guests in their various School capacities, attending their first Association event, to hold on to their passions, which can see you through challenging times when life does not go to plan.

Convivial “conversation” between generations of Old Priorians, in vintage from 1950 to 2017, and guests rounded off what was generally heartily agreed had been an excellent evening reunion.
